don't you hate it when they get metaphors wrong?

The other day a political pundit was answering the question on NPR of whether the fairly recently appointed General David Petraeus is likely to be honest about the situation in Iraq, and he stated that Petraeus "is a square shooter."

I wonder what that would look like.

Is there a word for what that is? It's not a mixed metaphor, exactly; more of a mangled cliché. Whatever it is, I kind of secretly love them. My favorite was when someone referred to a problem not discussed openly as "the elephant under the rug." Isn't that a fantastic visual? So perhaps a square shooter is someone who... shoots in all four directions?
